Elliott Smith’s “Miss Misery” was written for the soundtrack to Matt Damon and Ben Affleck’s movie, Good Will Hunting. Smith is one of those tragic artists whose hardships in life informed his work (he died young from stab wounds, whether they were self-inflicted or not remains a mystery). Haunting melodies and breathy vocals are his trademark, imposing a kind of closeted intimacy upon the listener. If you can believe it, this song was nominated for Best Original Song at the 1998 Oscars and subsequently lost to “My Heart Will Go On” by Celine Dion.
