Nobody can quite do justice to a ballad like Chris Martin of Coldplay. There’s something very touching and honest about the way the band strips “Amsterdam” down to its bones and then slowly builds the structure of the song back with a gentle crescendo of guitars and rhythms. I can never quite tell if I’m supposed to feel despairing or hopeful, as the song teeters between both realms. However, there’s no denying the stab of longing “Amsterdam” instills in the listener – a feeling that lingers long after the track is finished.
