Whoever said good things don’t come out of New Jersey? Ira Kaplan, Georgia Hubley and James McNew, members of the band Yo La Tengo, have been creating music together for over twenty years now. “Don’t Have To Be So Sad” is a song off their 2003 album Summer Sun. It’s a really great lyrical piece, informed more by poetry and colloquial speech than by melody. Ira’s voice sounds as though he’s reciting a soothing dictation (the little Shakespearean asides are a nice touch). I’m more than happy to have this track lull me to sleep any day!
