Being an Archie comics fan, I can’t help but imagine a lonely Betty Cooper singing this tune outside her window in Riverdale. In reality, the Archie in “Archie, Marry Me” is a geologist in Halifax and a close friend of the band. The super catchy single by Toronto’s Alvvays is off their 2014 self-titled album. The group has never shied away from their pop influences, often drawing parallels to indie-rock/pop contemporaries such as Camera Obscura. In an interview with SXSW earlier this year, Alvvays summed up their sound pretty well: “Some scolds feign outrage that we haven’t outgrown catchiness and intelligibility. Forgive us for not producing something more obtuse.” I’d say that’s a solid mic drop.
